February throwback! My friend Fionn McCabe did this awesome write up about my blog back in 2011. He’s an awesome artist too and you should check out his work at http://www.fionnmccabe.com/.

I’m really excited about the new drawings I’m working on. I love the lunch tray series and I know I’ll make a return to it, but for a while I”ve been itching to do a series of condiments & condom drawings. There are a lot of contemporary male artists making big ambitious work (Kehinde Wiley & Eric Yahnker come to mind) and I love their work but I also wonder why men can talk about sex in their work and suddenly it’s very funny and relevant. I’ll again reference to my art crushes on Aurel Schmidt, Erin Riley, & Nan Goldin. These contemporary female artists make amazing work that does not shy away from the human condition and human body, work that’s ambitious, and uniquely expressive of the hand of that individual. I’m sticking to the color pencils and graphite for awhile, it’s a challenge to see how I can make something look yummy by sticking to the same medium. You can say I’m re-teaching myself to draw. And I’m falling in love with drawing all over again. Here’s a tease of my new work, somehow this new piece is suddenly hip hop inspired. No title yet, but I like where it’s going.

I was recently interviewed about my recent zine release by my good friend Raleigh Strott for the Somerville Arts Council Nibble page about food & culture. Aurel Schmidt is a favorite of mine. Her work is a mix of lovely and aggressive that I’m really turned on by. She embraces sex and grit and sticks strongly to her color pencil on paper medium and it’s fucking awesome.
